State's attorney: Lindenhurst man charged with possessing bombs

A Lindenhurst man is facing a felony charge after authorities found two suspected pipe bombs in his bedroom, officials said.

Michael Suopys, 28, of the 800 block of Jefferson Drive, was ordered held on $1 million bail at a court appearance Sunday, according to a news release from the Lake County state's attorney's office. He is charged with possessing bombs containing an explosive substance, officials said.

Lindenhurst police and the FBI began an investigation Thursday, when they received a tip suggesting Suopys may have been making online purchases to construct a weapon, officials said.

Suopys was arrested the next day after authorities searched his home and found the two suspected pipe bombs, officials said. In his bedroom, they also found lab equipment, an empty steel pipe, a PBC pipe with a motor and two metal pipes containing cotton-like material similar to Nitrocellulose, which is highly flammable, according to the news release.

"We will never know for certain what potential tragedy was averted, but the evidence that has been recovered certainly indicates that this individual was planning something sinister," State's Attorney Michael Nerheim said in the release.

Authorities are continuing to investigate.
