Boys track and field: Kaneland runs away with 2A sectional title

While the Kaneland girls track team put itself in position to win the Class 2A state championship in Charleston with its performance Friday, the Knights' boys team ran roughshod over the field at the Class 2A Galena sectional.

Kaneland scored 113 points to far outdistance Dixon (82) and Freeport (64). Burlington Central was fourth with 56 points.

The Knights won four individual events and one relay on their way to the sectional title.

Brandon Cruz was a double winner for the Knights, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.11 and the 200 in 22.21. Mike Rinella won the pole vault for Kaneland with a leap of 15 feet while Tristan Kinder was discus champ with a throw of 157 feet, 1 inch. The Knights also won the 3,200 relay in a time of 8:03.54.

Other state qualifiers for the Knights included the 800 relay team (2nd), the 1,600 relay (5th), Danny Walker in the pole vault, Clayton Hannula in the shot put and discus, Tanner Robertson in the 300 hurdles and Matt Richtman in the 1,600.

Burlington Central had one sectional champ as Nick Harvey won the 800 run in a time of 1:57.44.

The Rockets also qualified their 1,600 relay team as well as Jared Trupp and Keegan Whitmer in the pole vault, Dionte Smith in the triple jump and Jason Berango in the 100.

Class 2A at Glenbard South: Aurora Central Catholic and Marmion each had a sectional champion at the Class 2A Glenbard South sectional. ACC's Nick Feltz won the high jump at 6-3 and Marmion's Seth Groom won the triple jump with a leap of 44-3ΒΌ. ACC also qualified its 1,600 relay team and McKimmon Engelhardt in the 110 hurdles. Other state qualifiers for Marmion included Andrew Burroughs and Charlie Zimmer in the 3,200 and Quinn Gratz in the 800. Benet Academy won the team title. Marmion was third an ACC fifth.

Class 1A at Seneca: The St. Edward relay team of Dwayne Allen, Alec Uscila, Zachary Olenek and Albert Lopez won both the 400 and 800 relay races at the Class 1A Seneca sectional. The 400 team clocked in at 43.84 and the 800 squad ran a 1:32.45. Olenek also qualified in the long jump, Uscila won the 100 in a time of 11.18 and Allen qualified in the 200. Westminster Christian's Zach Anderson won the shot put (151-3) and the Warriors' Jason Yaccino qualified in the 800. Aurora Christian qualified Andrew Hasulube in the high jump and the 110 hurdles, Zach Williams in the shot put and discus and Jeremiah Wright in the 100.

Class 1A at Oregon: Harvest Christian will have three athletes competing in Charleston next weekend as Michael Sisko (3,200), Noah Varvara (400) and Andrew Dobrescu (1,600) all qualified out of the Oregon sectional.

Class 3A at DeKalb: Due to a malfunctioning timer the Class 3A DeKalb sectional was postponed to 10 a.m. Saturday.
