Popular German holiday market expanding to Chicago suburb

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A popular German holiday market that has operated downtown in Chicago for the past decade is expanding to the city's western suburbs this Christmas season.

The Christkindlmarket will be held in Naperville's historic Naper Settlement beginning Nov. 25. It will operate on 21 dates in November and December.

The marketplace features traditional wooden huts where visitors may purchase one-of-a-kind gifts and German delicacies. It's modeled after the original market, which started in Nuremburg, Germany in 1545.

Christkindlmarket Chicago has drawn scores of people to Daley Plaza since 1996.

Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico says the new market will add to the influx of visitors to the city during the holidays and give the community and its businesses "a chance to shine even brighter."

The event is free and open to the public.
