Elgin man facing drug charges after Naperville bust

A 49-year-old Elgin man faces a pair of drug-related charges after Naperville police said they found him with more than three pounds of heroin.

Eduardo Lara Cardenas, of the 300 block of McClure Avenue, was driving Tuesday afternoon near Center and School streets in Naperville when he was stopped by officers as part of a narcotics investigation, authorities said. With the help of a drug-sniffing dog, police said they found the heroin with an estimated street value of $320,000.

Cardenas was charged with unlawful possession with intent to deliver and controlled substance trafficking. He is being held on $1 million bond in the DuPage County jail.

Naperville police said the arrest resulted from a joint investigation with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Amtrak police.

"We're proud of our collaborative effort with the DEA and Amtrak," Cmdr. Jason Arres said Wednesday. "This is a significant amount of heroin to take off the streets."
