Field of Honor coming to Algonquin Commons

In celebration of Armed Forces Day, and in advance of Memorial Day, a Field of Honor is coming to the Randall Road corridor, giving locals a chance to honor Illinois residents who served in the Persian Gulf and lost their lives for their country.

The Algonquin Commons mall along Randall Road is hosting the event Thursday to Monday, May 19-23, as a tribute to fallen soldiers. Armed Forces Day is Saturday, May 21.

The Veteran Network Committee puts together the Field of Honor in areas throughout the state to pay tribute to those who've made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Field of Honor is a display of more than 300 American flags, each with multiple names, ages, hometowns and ranks of the fallen soldiers from our state.

People can come honor the fallen day or night. There will be volunteers from the Veteran Network Committee at the Randall Road mall 24 hours a day while the display is up, watching over the Field of Honor.

The volunteers also can help lead visitors to flags of specific fallen soldiers. However, visitors do not need to know anyone to visit the Field of Honor. All are welcome to pay tribute.

An opening ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 20, which will include the Navy Sea Cadets singing the national anthem and "God Bless America."

The mall is at 1900 Randall Road.

An outdoor concert:

The Geneva Commons mall along Randall Road will host The Wredling Pops musical group at an outdoor concert Wednesday, May 18.

The group, which is from Wredling Middle School in St. Charles, will perform near the mall's bell tower beginning at 4:30 p.m. If it rains, the concert will be postponed to Wednesday, May 25.

While this isn't part of the mall's summer concert series, organizers are hoping it will be a nice preview of the outdoor music that shoppers and visitors along the Randall Road corridor will hear this year.

The summer concert series is set to debut June 5 at the mall.
