Man crashes into downtown Elgin post office

A man was taken to the hospital Monday morning after he crashed into the post office in downtown Elgin.

Police responded to a call at 8:45 a.m., Deputy Chief Bill Wolf said.

The man was taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital and his condition is unknown.

“It's unclear why the vehicle left the road but right now we are casting it as something probably medical related,” Wolf said.

Sgt. Steve Bianchi, who responded to the scene, said the preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling westbound on Highland Avenue before hitting the south side of the building off Highland and Grove avenues.

Acting Postmaster Tom Castillo said he wasn't in the building at the time of the crash, but his staff reported hearing a loud “boom.”

The crash damaged the exterior brick wall and cracked the plaster inside, Castillo said. The room on the other side of the wall is empty, he said, and the post office is still in full operation.

No one else was involved or injured in the crash, Wolf said.
