Driver crashes into Barrington school, dies

A driver has died after crashing into a Barrington middle school Monday afternoon, police say.

The crash happened about 2:35 p.m. near the front entrance of Station Middle School, 215 Eastern Ave., District 220 officials said.

There were no other injuries, fire officials said.

"We didn't have any students outside so we were thankful that no students or staff were injured," said Morgan Delack, District 220's director of communications.

Alternate dismissal procedures were put in place while emergency responders handled the crash.

"Students did a great job following directions from staff so everyone could leave campus in a safe and orderly manner," a statement from school officials read.

The crash did not do extensive damage to the outside of the building, Delack said.

The driver's identification is being withheld pending notification of family. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning, Lake County Deputy Coroner Orlando Portillo said.

It's unclear whether a medical emergency played a role in the crash, he said.

"The police still have to do their investigation and talk to witnesses and see what they saw," he said. "That will give us a little insight as to what occurred, but we won't know until we do an autopsy."
