Like to mock movie princesses? 'Disenchanted!' may be for you

Do the personalities of Cinderella, Snow White and other Disney princesses annoy you?

Then you might like the sassy, musical comedy “Disenchanted!,” which opens Tuesday, May 10, at the Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place in Chicago.

Leave the children behind for this adult show, which parodies and mocks the famous female characters.

The idea was conceived by a history teacher who, while teaching his class about the colonial settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, couldn't help but wonder what the real Pocahontas - a rough-and-tumble 10-year-old Powhatan girl - would think of her Disney movie counterpart. So he wrote a play about the warm, bubbly princesses evolving into modern-day women.

The Toronto-based cast includes Madison Hayes-Crook, who plays Cinderella. She said her character loves being a princess, but realizes her thoughts and opinions have value. Cinderella also has some emotional baggage, which happens after you live with an evil stepmother and two horrible stepsisters.

“It's a very, very funny show ... and it's a very adult show,” Hayes-Crook said. “In fairy tales, it's all about getting the prince. But there's more in life than that. She's learning that she's more than just her beauty, and there's value in doing things for yourself.”

“Disenchanted!” is in the midst of a sold-out, award-winning run in cities like Orlando and New York, where critics have described it as “funny and a touch wicked,” “a girls-night-out rebellion” and “'Bridesmaids' for Disney princesses.”

Hayes-Crook said the play's messages will be relatable to women - making it a fun girls' night out show.

“You get to fall in love with all your favorite princesses again,” she said, “but for entirely different reasons.”
