Cops head to the roof to raise money for Special Olympics

For the 14th year in a row, hundreds of law enforcement officers from throughout Illinois will stake out Dunkin' Donuts rooftops on Friday, May 20, to benefit Special Olympics Illinois.

Starting at 5 a.m., officers will climb onto 225 Dunkin' Donuts rooftops to raise awareness and donations for the Torch Run, Illinois law enforcement's special fundraising arm for Special Olympics.

With 25 more Dunkin' Donuts locations participating this year, officers hope to top last year's donation total of $540,000.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Special Olympics athletes and families, and representatives from Chicago's major sports teams are among the special guests who will join police officers. Dunkin' Donuts will donate $15,000 to the Torch Run Fund.

Each guest who visits a Cop on a Rooftop location that day and makes a donation to the Torch Run will get a free doughnut coupon; those to donate at least $10 will receive a Law Enforcement Torch Run travel mug (while supplies last) and a coupon for free medium coffee. Torch Run T-shirts and hats will be sold.

"I think Cop on a Rooftop is a neat fundraiser to show support for Special Olympics and gain attention for cops being on the roof," said Special Olympics athlete Bree Bogucki, who will join police officers at the Dunkin' Donuts in Cary that day. "Also, it means that I get doughnuts."
