Chicago Sinfonietta announces new season for Naperville, Chicago

The Chicago Sinfonietta has announced its 2016-17 season, which includes a number of guest artists and ensembles.

This marks the sixth season under the music directorship of conductor Mei-Ann Chen, and the sinfonietta continues to perform each concert first at North Central College's Wentz Concert Hall in Naperville, and then at Symphony Center in Chicago.

The subscription concert series offers:

• "Unhinged" features the guest piano duo Anderson & Roe and pianist Clayton Stephenson in music of Stravinsky, Gershwin and more. 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17; 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19.

• The 7th annual "Dia de los Muertos" ("Day of the Dead") is paired with silent films provided by the Chicago Film Archives to accompany music by Mussorgsky and Saint-Saëns, plus Chicago premieres of Carlos Rafael Rivera's Mayan-inspired "Popol-Vuh" and "PizziCuban Polka." 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29; 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31.

• The annual "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute Concert" features the Roosevelt University Conservatory Choir, soloists from the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and young musicians from People's Music School, Merit School of Music, Midwest Young Artists and the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. The program features music of Beethoven, Vivaldi and Williams. 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15; 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, plus a Skokie performance at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.

• "More than a Letter" focuses on LGBTQ composers and features guest conductor Michael Morgan with pianist Sara Davis Buechner and the Allegrezza Singers performing music of Bernstein, Rachmaninoff and the Chicago premiere of Jennifer Higdon's "Peachtree Street." 8 p.m. Saturday, March 25; 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 27.

• "Rightness in the Rhythm" features the Marcus Roberts Trio performing works of Scott Joplin, George Gershwin and more. 8 p.m. Friday, May 12; 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 15.

The Chicago Sinfonietta also makes two summer appearances.

• A return to the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park features conductor Mei-Ann Chen with guests Clinard Dance Theatre flamenco troupe, the Highland Park High School Marching Band and Waubonsie Valley High School Mosaic Choir at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16.

• A return to Cantigny Park in Wheaton features conductor Mei-Ann Chen and Waubonsie Valley High School Mosaic Choir in music of Tchaikovsky, Copland and more at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4.

Tickets to the Ravinia concert are on sale now by visiting ravinia.org. Discounted season tickets are now on sale, while single tickets go on sale Friday, July 1, with prices ranging from $48-$60 for Naperville concerts and from $18-$60 for Chicago concerts. Pianist Clayton Stephenson is slated to be a guest artist with the Chicago Sinfonietta for its "Unhinged" concerts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, in Naperville and 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Chicago.
