Chicago cop was shot when fleeing suspect tossed gun

CHICAGO (AP) - Prosecutors say a man charged with shooting a Chicago police officer was attempting to toss away a gun when it discharged and wounded the officer.

The officer was shot in the shoulder while responding Monday to an armed person in the Little Village neighborhood. Authorities called the wound non-life threatening.

Prosecutors said Thursday 25-year-old Rafael Martir-Ubiles was fleeing police when he tried to throw a .45-caliber gun onto an apartment building roof. It hit a wall instead and discharged. Another officer continued to chase Martir-Ubiles and arrested him in a gangway.

Martir-Ubiles is charged with aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of firearm by a gang member. A judge ordered him held without bond.

It wasn't immediately known if Martir-Ubiles has a lawyer.
