U-46 to raise funds for program for deaf students

A 5K walk/run to raise funds for and awareness about Elgin Area School District U-46's deaf and hard of hearing program is May 14.

The inaugural event is expected to provide an opportunity for students with hearing loss to interact with one another and the public.

The race begins at 9 a.m. from the Bartlett Nature Center in James "Pate" Philip State Park, 2050 W. Stearns Road, Bartlett, west of Route 59. Awards will be given out at 10:30 a.m.

"This is a great chance for our deaf and hard of hearing students to feel like they are a part of the community, and that there are people who care," said Kimberly Stegge, a race organizer who also teaches students who are deaf or hard of hearing at Horizon Elementary in Hanover Park.

Stegge said the goal is to raise $5,000 to purchase equipment, technology and materials for U-46's deaf and hard of hearing program. Funds also could help families meet the needs of children with hearing loss.

Signs will be displayed along the 5K route offering information about U-46's program, which serves more than 100 students through specialized educational services and staff support.

Teachers provide instruction in special classes and mainstream classrooms, depending on students' needs. The district also employs a team of sign language interpreters, teacher assistants, an audiologist, a counselor, and an auditory trainer. The program was established in 2007-08 after separating from a special education cooperative.

"More than anything, these kids just want to fit in," said Tracy Michalski, whose son, Zachary, was born prematurely and diagnosed with profound hearing loss at a young age.

After learning of his condition, the Michalskis moved to Bartlett to take advantage of U-46's program through which Zachary transitioned to a mainstream classroom by third grade.

This spring, Zachary will graduate from Bartlett High School and attend the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana this fall to pursue a degree in business and finance.

Registration for the 5K run/fun run/walk is $25 for adults and $10 for students at u-46.org.
