NFL Draft Town means Chicago road closures

As Chicago embraces its transformation into NFL Draft Town this week, here's the lowdown on road closures so those venturing into the city this week can avoid being blindsided by traffic.

The NFL Draft Town Fan Festival celebration runs Thursday through Saturday in Grant Park with special appearances by football stars, performances, interactive games and on-field clinics.

People are advised to take public transit to downtown Chicago, but if you drive be prepared for issues on streets surrounding Grant Park. Inbound commuters on the Eisenhower Expressway should bail out of Congress Parkway early.

• Westbound Balbo Avenue is closed between Columbus and Lake Shore drives through May 6. Eastbound Balbo Avenue will be closed May 3 through May 6.

• Michigan Avenue between Jackson Boulevard and Balbo Avenue will close from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday to accommodate red-carpet events.

• Columbus Drive between Jackson Boulevard and Balbo Avenue is closed until Monday.

• Congress Parkway between Michigan Avenue and Columbus Drive and the Congress Circle is closed until Monday. Congress Parkway between Wabash Avenue and Michigan Avenue will close from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 3 p.m. to later in the evening Friday for special events.

Metra is offering an $8 weekend pass providing unlimited trips. Up to three children age 11 and younger can ride free with a paying adult.
