Baseball: Addison Trail rallies to defeat Glenbard West

After striking out his first two times at the plate Thursday, Robert Baughman got a prime opportunity to make those initial at-bats a distant memory.

And the Addison Trail catcher did just that.

Baughman's 2-run double capped off a two-out, 5-run rally in the fifth inning and that held up in a 6-5 baseball victory over Glenbard West in a West Suburban Conference crossover in Addison.

"I was just looking for my pitch," Baughman said. "I was trying to drive it somewhere and get the runs in. I was able to get the double, I was satisfied.

"We just want to keep fighting this year. That was a great win for us."

The Blazers (7-7) trailed 5-1 with two outs and nobody on in the fifth. A couple of walks and an error led to their second run and after a hit by pitch, Ricky Perez drove in two with a single, setting the stage for Baughman.

A day earlier, Addison Trail had loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh but fell short in a 5-4 loss.

"Yesterday we didn't get the big hit, today we did," Addison Trail coach Mike Kennedy said. "West Suburban Conference baseball is tough this year, every game is a dogfight. This is a big win for us. We took a tough loss yesterday, and to bounce back is hopefully a sign of this team coming of age. This is a young team and we are starting to mature."

Bobby Daniels notched the win in relief and Nick Villasenor recorded the save.

Glenbard West (5-10), which had won three of four games coming in, scored four runs in the third. Andrew Zienty had an RBI single and Gus Kalivas knocked in two with a hit.

Arno Curtis started on the mound and worked into the fifth, striking out six.

"There is no such thing as a good loss, but that is a bad loss right there," Glenbard West coach Andy Schultz said. "When you have a 5-1 lead, you have to find a way to hold on. You have to play seven full innings. You can't get comfortable. But as frustrating as this is, hopefully we learn from it."
