Mariano's groundbreaking Monday in Des Plaines

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Monday for the new Mariano's grocery store on the northeast corner of Golf and Mount Prospect roads in Des Plaines.

The ceremony is scheduled for 7:30 a.m., marking the start of construction on the store, which is expected to open in the first quarter of 2017. The $24 million project also includes $670,000 in upgrades to neighboring Blackhawk Park, on which the park district agreed to grant the developer an easement for a driveway leading to the store's parking lot.

Former offices and the garage of Motor Coach Industries were demolished in January to make way for the new building.

Despite sale, Mariano's plans to build in Naperville, Bloomingdale, Des Plaines
