History doesn't bode well for GOP

In 1972, the year that Richard Nixon crushed George McGovern, I had a friend who was running for judge in Cook County and I offered to help his campaign. Since we lived in Schaumburg and there were very few Democrats there, I found myself named precinct captain.

The prospects of McGovern winning were slim and none. At a Democratic rally for precinct captains, the guys in the rain coats from downtown told us to push the local candidates and not to pass out literature or even bring up McGovern's name. The result was a crushing defeat for Democrats all the way down the ballot.

In the election of 2010 and 2014, Democrats tried to run away from President Obama and disavowed any support for his agenda, especially Obamacare. The results: In the 2010 election the Dems lost six seats in the Senate and 63 in the House. In the 2014 election, the Dems lost eight seats in the Senate and 13 in the House.

There is now talk of the Republicans running away from Donald Trump if he gets the nomination. With the Republicans having 24 seats and Democrats only 10 seats up for election, history tells us where we are headed.
