Carmel Catholic students win Mayor's Cup Math Challenge
MUNDELEIN, Ill. - 4/4/2016 - Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz visited Carmel Catholic High School to congratulate student members of the varsity and junior varsity math teams on their recent success at the Mayor's Cup Math Challenge. The teams took top honors in individual and team categories at the annual math competition, which attracted a record number of students from every school district in Mundelein.
More than 220 students from various schools competed for $12,000 in cash prizes. In the individual competition, Carmel Catholic students earned $5,900 in total scholarship money. All students participated in the individual competition, with the top 10 finishers in each division receiving a monetary scholarship.
Carmel Catholic students claimed six of the top ten individual awards in the varsity division:
Tom Trzupek '16 (1st place, $1250), Lauren Caffarelli '17 (5th place, $500), Jason Hadjuk '17 (6th place, $300), Zach Belyaev '17 (8th place, $200), Matt Colbert '16 (9th place, $150), and Sammie Dickmann '17 (10th place, $100).
Carmel's junior varisty team took eight of the top ten spots in their respective division: Patricia Freeman '19 (1st place, $1000), Theresa Thiel '18 (2nd place, $800), Patrick Delos Reyes '19 (4th place, $500), Coral Wang '18 (5th place, $400), George Yacu '19 (6th place, $250), Peter Hefner '19 (7th place, $200), Madison Sasman '18 (8th place, $150), and Teddy Willemsen '18 (9th place, $100).
Following the individual competition, students competed as teams to win the traveling team trophy awarded to the top school in each division. Carmel Catholic's varsity and junior varsity teams earned first place trophies. Members of the varsity team included: Lauren Cafarelli '17, Matt Colbert '16, Sammie Dickmann '17, Jason Hadjuk '17, Spencer Mueller '16, and Thomas Trzupek '16. Members of the junior varsity team included: Patrick Delos Reyes '19, Julia Elert '18, David Hoffman '18, Trevor Schoenfeld '18, Theresa Thiel '18, and Coral Wang '18.
Mayor Lentz presented trophies to the students and their moderators, Charlotte Pavelka and Christine Falkstrom, at Carmel Catholic. "The Carmel Catholic math team represents some of the best qualities of our student community," said Mark Ostap, principal. "We are so proud of what they have been able to accomplish with their talents and enthusiasm."
