U-46 parent group to host Realtor breakfast

An Elgin Area School District U-46 parent group will host a breakfast April 14 for Realtors within the Bartlett area.

The breakfast will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at Bartlett High School, 701 W. Schick Road, Bartlett.

This is the second Realtor breakfast this school year hosted by the U-46 Citizens' Advisory Council's Family and Community Engagement Committee. Another breakfast was held in February at Elgin High School.

“Realtors are our direct link to new families and these presentations have proven to be invaluable amid the busy spring selling season,” U-46 CEO Tony Sanders said. “We know that once people learn about the breadth and depth of our curriculum and opportunities, such as our Dual Language program and our comprehensive special education services, they are much more comfortable and eager to let others know that this district is indeed a wonderful place to raise a family.”

Sanders will present an overview of the district and programs in local schools. Realtors also will have an opportunity to ask questions and tour Bartlett High School.

The event is free but Realtors must register to reserve a seat. To register, click here. For more information, contact Karla Jiménez, coordinator of family and community engagement, at (847) 888-5000, ext. 4211.

U-46 CEO to raise scholarship funds for college-bound graduates:

Elgin Area School District U-46 CEO Tony Sanders is raising funds to support college-bound graduates this year.

Last year, 15 graduates received the U-46 Superintendent's Scholarship, a $1,000 gift awarded to outstanding students who are the first in their families to attend college.

“I was happy to win the scholarship because you have to be a leader in the community and I felt proud that other people consider me to be a leader,” said Larkin High School 2015 graduate Joceline Molina, who is studying nursing at Aurora University. “It also took away some of the financial burden off my family and I was really happy about that.”

Former U-46 Superintendent José Torres established the scholarship fund in 2012 through the U-46 Educational Foundation. Since then, 65 graduates have been awarded $1,000 scholarships each.

“The families of future first-generation college students tend to be fiercely dedicated to the promise of higher education but may not have all the necessary resources to support this costly endeavor,” Sanders said.

The cost of college tuition averages from $20,000 yearly for in-state tuition, including room and board, at a four-year public institution to $44,000 yearly at a private university, per the College Board.

Sanders is calling on past and future donors to contribute funds toward the scholarship program.
