Seniors take part in Exercise Across America

Residents of Sedgebrook in Lincolnshire participated in the community's Exercise Across America program. Their goals were to reach various destinations throughout the United States via exercise.

Participants chose their USA "destination" and then set about reaching it by exercising on the elliptical or bike, swimming laps in the pool or by walking. For every mile that they completed, they were awarded 100 miles.

"For instance, in order to 'reach' San Francisco, which is a distance of 2,141 miles from Chicago, they needed to exercise a total of 21.41 miles to get there," said Ruth Reyna, fitness manager at Sedgebrook.

In total, 70 residents participated in the challenge, racking up a total of 1,447.87 miles. The "winner" was James Swab, who exercised a total of more than 109 miles, the equivalent of 10,900 miles.

"Many of the residents at Sedgebrook are already involved in our fitness program, so this was just a fun way to encourage them to keep moving. This is also a little bit of incentive to get new residents motivated to start working out" Reyna said.

"We are dedicated to helping residents maximize their fitness so that they can maintain their independence, and thus continue to enjoy a healthy lifestyle."
