Carmel's rally falls short in Alabama

Carmel's softball team erased an early deficit but wound up dropping a 4-3 decision to Fairhope in its tournament finale in Gulf Shores, Ala., on Wednesday.

Carmel (4-1) trailed 3-0 after two innings. Down 3-1 in the top of the sixth, the Corsairs got a long home run to left field by freshman Jordan Swiatkowski (2-for-3). Emma Bartz reached on a dropped-third strike and sped to third on Flynn Johnson's sacrifice bunt. Then with two out, Jen Giesey (2-for-4, double) singled home Bartz to tie the score.

Fairhope, out of Alabama, surged back by scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Carmel will play Vernon Hills in a nonconference game at 10 a.m. Thursday in Alabama.

Grayslake Central 15, First Assembly Christian 1: In Orlando, Fla., Elisa Koshy went 2-for-2 with 2 triples and 2 RBI, as the Rams beat their opponent from Cordova, Tenn., in five innings.

Brooke Heraty (2-for-4) had 2 doubles, one of which knocked in a pair of runs. Winning-pitcher Reagen Radke (5 IP, 1 H, 8 K) had an RBI triple, and Lexi Waigand tripled as well.

Monroe 3, Grayslake North 0: In Orlando, Fla., the Knights were shut out in their morning game against the Wisconsin school.

Molly Rutkowski doubled for one of the Knights' 6 hits. Jessica Vaughn struck out seven in suffering the loss, as Grayslake North fell to 2-1 on their trip.

On Tuesday, winning-pitcher Jenna Pozezinski homered and Lauren Olsen doubled twice, as the Knights beat Sidwell Friends 14-3 in five innings.

Lawrence County 3, Vernon Hills 2: In Alabama, the Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Nicole Pieper (1-for-2) and a run-scoring groundout by Delaney Bowen (1-for-3).

Lawrence County scored single runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings.

Dana Meline was 3-for-3 for Vernon Hills (1-4) and Sami Saliba doubled.

Midway 8, Lakes 5 (8 inn.): In Orlando, Fla., Midway, out of Kingston, Tenn., took the lead in the eighth inning, and the Eagles were unable to muster a comeback.

Ashley Horner racked up 3 RBI on 3 hits for Lakes (1-1). She doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the first and sixth innings.

Lakes had 12 hits but also struck out 12 times.
