Meijer to close Niles store

Meijer announced it will close its Niles store on June 18.

The Michigan-based retailer said it would not be feasible to keep the Niles store, 9000 W. Golf Road, open, based on recent volume. The company will find opportunities at other Meijer stores in the area for the store's workers. Those choosing not to relocate will be offered severance packages, according to a news release.

The store is in a leased space and the site will continue to be maintained by the property owner.

Despite the closing, Meijer said it remains committed to the Chicago suburbs and Illinois. During the past several years, Meijer has invested more than $150 million in new stores in Illinois, including store openings planned in Round Lake Beach and Flossmoor, as well as new store openings in Rockford and Machesney in 2015 and Homer Glen and Mokena in 2014.
