Elgin woman accused of robbing gas station

An Elgin woman with purple hair was charged with aggravated robbery after she took money from a gas station early Tuesday morning, police say.

Elgin police were called just before 3 a.m. to the McDonald's/BP gas station on the 800 block of St. Charles Road, where a clerk told them a woman came into the store with her hand in her pocket, implying she had a gun, Elgin police said in a news release.

The woman took a small amount of cash and fled on foot, police said. Responding officers searched the area and located the suspect a short time later. The clerk was able to identify the suspect, police said.

Shannon Aasen, 41, of the 0-100 block of South Crystal Street, was charged with one count of aggravated robbery while indicating she was armed with a firearm, police said. She's expected in bond court Wednesday morning.
