Endorsement: Hernandez for Democratic nomination for Kane County Board, Dist. 8

Vying in the Democratic primary for Kane County District 8 are Margarita "Maggy" Celis, 43, touting her experience, and Barbara Hernandez, 23, touting her youth. Incumbent Maria Vasquez, who was appointed after her husband Jessie died at 51, isn't running.

Vasquez' death leaves big shoes to fill. He was a senior Democrat on the board known for his activism in Montgomery and Aurora. Either candidate will have to grow into the job.

Both candidates live in Aurora and on many issues have similar interests and hold similar opinions. Celis cites her experience working with hundreds of Realtors as past president of the local association. Hernandez cites her interest in politics since she was a student at Aurora East; she is assistant chief of staff to state Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, who has endorsed her.

Hernandez clearly is ambitious and would be a very active board member; she deserves a chance to show what she can make of the job.
