Author Rebecca Makkai to offer reading Feb. 25 at Dundee library

Rebecca Makkai will read from her latest collection of short stories, titled "Music for Wartime," starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, at the Dundee Library, 555 Barrington Ave. (Route 68) in East Dundee.

Books will be available for purchase at the event and Makkai will sign copies.

Described on her website as "ranging from comedy to tragedy to the surreal, from the world of academia to war zones, these 15 stories ask the question of what it means to be an artist in a brutal and sometimes ugly world."

Based in Chicago, Makkai has published the novels "The Hundred Year House," which won the Chicago Writer's Association's Novel of the Year award and "The Borrower," which was a Booklist Top 10 Debut novel.

Her writings appear regularly in magazines such as Harper's and New England Review. She was an elementary Montessori teacher for 12 years before stopping to write full time. She teaches at Lake Forest College and in Sierra Nevada College's MFA program, and runs StoryStudio Chicago's Novel-in-a-Year workshop.
