Garage catches fire in Geneva

A fire started by carelessly discarded smoking materials in a Geneva garage Monday morning caused $40,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Nobody was injured when the blaze started just before 9 a.m. on the 2700 block of Conant Court, fire officials said.

A resident called 911 after returning home and discovering the fire. Two other people asleep at the time were able to exit on their own. The fire was extinguished within 20 minutes and contained to a garage wall and ceiling area in an unfinished basement.

Firefighters from St. Charles, Batavia and Elburn assisted.
