When custom makes sense for your home

Certain home improvement projects will be transformative. I was staring at the sliding door in my bedroom this morning, remembering how we talked about replacing all the windows, but instead I chose to raise the bedroom ceiling and buy a taller sliding door to have as much glass as possible. It cost a bundle. I asked myself, was it worth it?

Some people would not understand this nuance, but I love the fact my blue-painted bedroom now feels like the outdoors. There is no break between the light blue ceiling and the sky. So yes, it was worth every penny.

Everyone has their own idea of a good investment for the home. There are many different ways to use your discretionary funds for home improvement:

• Folding doors can blend an interior space with a deck or patio or completely transform the use of your family room or living room. Quality folding doors are costly but they are versatile and can change the feel of a room. You might also invest in new flooring to blend spaces together or repaint all rooms one uniform color so the interior space flows.

• By designing new custom cabinets, you can upgrade your home and add a personalized touch. While custom designs generally cost more than retail designs, custom builds are often more refined and better quality. That being said, designing a custom piece requires some planning and attention in order to achieve what you desire. You won't be disappointed if you do your homework before beginning the project and participate during the process.

You must be able to describe your ideas for the finished product to the cabinetmaker. So, first take a good look at the items you wish to store. For example, a dining room cabinet could store all your dishware: your silverware, place mats, dinner napkins and serving utensils. Cabinets below could hold serving dishes, bowls and other items. The flat surface of the cabinet also serves as a buffet table for food, dessert or even a bar. An additional wine rack with barware and wineglasses stored above is a convenient place for your spirits.

You should choose your carpenter carefully. Don't be shy to ask for their portfolio so you can see other pieces they have made. Most carpenters will prepare a preliminary drawing for you. Make sure you measure out the dimensions of the sketch in the physical space of your home. Once you approve the sketch, ask for samples of the wood and clarify what material will be used for the interior drawers and cabinets, such as drawer lining and hinges. You should be able to choose these details as well.

A well-thought out and well-built custom cabinet can be one of the best investments for your home. With added convenience and function to any room, these are the moments when good design pays off in spades.
