Aurora police hope video sheds light on fatal shooting

Aurora police continue searching for suspects, including through video surveillance, in the fatal shooting a 36-year-old man and the stabbing of a 22-year-old Batavia man, which occurred within moments of each other outside a downtown restaurant early Saturday morning.

"We're continuing to ask anyone who has any information to come forward," said Dan Ferrelli, media relations manager with the Aurora Police Department.

Officers were called at 1:40 a.m. Saturday to the parking lot of La Quinta De Los Reyes, 36 E. New York St., in response to reports of shots fired with a person down, police said.

Officers arrived to find Marcus Holland lying in the lot suffering from gunshot wounds and at least 100 other people shouting and fighting, authorities said. Howard, of the 1000 block of Foran Lane in Aurora, died at the scene as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were then alerted to the stabbing victim, who was attacked moments after shots were fired, police said. He was treated at an Aurora hospital for a nonlife threatening injury to his back, according to a news release.

Police said they are unable to say for certain that the shooting and stabbing are related, and there is no clear motive for either attack.

Authorities say the parking lot altercation stemmed from a large party inside the establishment, during which two groups of people began arguing and fighting.

The shooting suspect was on foot and fled the scene immediately after the gunfire, police said.

Initial reports said that while investigators cultivated some leads at the scene, most of the people there were uncooperative or even hostile with officers.

"We are still trying to get in touch with some people. We will go back and re-interview some other people," Ferrelli said. "It's common sense to know that there were probably a lot of people who left before we had a chance to talk to them."

A description of the shooting suspect was not given. The suspect in the stabbing is described as a black man in his early 20s, 5'10", 150 to 170 pounds, wearing a black, white, and red hooded sweatshirt with a white shield on the front.

In addition to witnesses, police are examining video from nearby surveillance cameras.

"We do have a lot of video evidence from that business and the surrounding businesses, so we're continuing to comb over that and pouring a lot of resources into the investigation, so that we can hold whoever is responsible accountable for this," Ferrelli said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Aurora police at (630) 256-5500 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.
