3 years in prison for attack on Elgin jogger

A 22-year-old homeless man was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday after pleading guilty to attacking a female jogger in Elgin in 2015.

Cody Sarantakos of Elgin was charged with aggravated battery in a public place and unlawful restraint, both felonies, in connection with an attack on an 18-year-old June 3.

According to police, the woman was approached around noon on a bike path near McBride Street, north of Kimball Street, and thrown to the ground. A bicyclist witnessed the attack and called police, who used a K-9 unit in an attempt to find the attacker but could not locate him.

Detectives reviewed surveillance video from nearby businesses and identified Sarantakos, who was arrested the next day, police said.

Judge Linda Abrahamson accepted the plea, in which prosecutors dismissed the less severe charge of unlawful restraint, records show.

Thursday's guilty plea was Sarantakos' second felony offense.

In mid-May, Sarantakos pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of attempted burglary from an April 2015 incident in Elgin, records show. He received 24 months of probation, was fined $685, and spent 12 days in jail.

With the attempted burglary plea, prosecutors also resolved two misdemeanor cases against Sarantakos from April 2015. Retail theft charges were dismissed, and he received conditional discharge from a charge of theft of services from Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, records show.

Sarantakos can have his prison sentence cut in half for good behavior. He receives credit for the seven months being held at Kane County jail.
