Lake Park names new school board member

A Roselle man with experience as both a teacher and school board member, Thomas Hollatz, has been appointed to the Lake Park High School District 108 board of education.

He replaces Judith Briggs, who resigned earlier this month citing personal reasons after more than 12 years on the board.

Hollatz, who has two children who are Lake Park graduates, said he will bring a forward-looking approach to the board.

"I am very passionate about education, and I believe strong schools make an excellent foundation for a strong community," he said in his application letter.

Seven candidates applied for the post.

"I am confident in Tom's ability and enthusiastic about the contributions he can make as a board member," board President Barb Layer said.

"His background as a teacher and school technology coordinator will help guide us in making important decisions in the best interest of our students and communities."

Hollatz is the second Lake Park board member to be appointed this month. The board selected Janice Gatbunton of Itasca Jan. 11 to complete the term of Doug Denson, who died unexpectedly in December.

Gatbunton previously served on Itasca Elementary District 10's school board and has been a member of the School Law Committee of the local bar association. She has two children and said she will bring a student-centered approach to the board.

Both of the new board members will be sworn in Monday, Jan. 25, and serve until the next election in April 2017.
