Transgender student who fought district gets locker room use

PALATINE, Ill. (AP) - A Chicago area transgender student whose fight to use a girls' locker room sparked a national debate will be allowed access on Friday.

The move follows a long battle with federal authorities and public meetings. Palatine-based Township High School District 211 entered an agreement with federal officials last month after the student filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

The student's name wasn't released. She's being represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois which says she's looking forward to having access.

District spokesman Tom Petersen says privacy curtains were initially installed but they've been replaced with stalls. He says they resemble department store changing areas. Both the boys' and girls' locker rooms now have five stalls each for any student to use.
