Elgin fire leaves home uninhabitable, no injuries reported

Nobody was injured in a fire Sunday morning that left an Elgin home uninhabitable, officials said.

Shortly after 7:30 a.m., Elgin fire crews arrived at a home in the 800 block of Patricia Avenue to see smoke coming from a roof vent of an attached garage, according to a news release.

Firefighters found a fire in the attic near the back of the home, which was unoccupied at the time, officials said.

The roof had partially collapsed, and there was "heavy fire involvement," so crews fought the fire from the outside of the home, officials said. It was under control by about 9:15 a.m.

The preliminary damage estimate is about $225,000 to both the home and its contents, officials said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Elgin Fire Department.
