Conant snags spot in Mundelein semifinals

Conant's girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the 16-team Mundelein Holiday Tournament with a 47-34 victory over Lake Park on Tuesday night.

Conant will face Prairie Ridge at 8 p.m. today while Grayslake North meets Libertyville in the first semifinal at 6:30 p.m.

Cougars junior guard Jorie Wachal produced her fifth 20-point plus scoring game of the season with a game-high 28 points.

Wachal's big night included three 3-pointers and 9-of-13 free throws.

Karli Heneghan chipped in 7 points and Michelle Benson had 6 with a pair of 3-pointers as the Cougars improved to 5-8.

Hoffman Estates 54, Niles West 50: Hoffman Estates earned its first win at the Mundelein tournament and improved to 6-7.

The Hawks will face Cary-Grove at noon today.

Palatine 51, Willowbrook 37: Senior forward Ashley Shapiro scored 14 points and freshman guard Elena Porrata added 12 to help lead the Pirates to victory in the 32nd annual Bill Neibch Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.

Porrata also handed out 3 assists while Shapiro had 5 rebounds.

Teammates Brittany Shapiro (5 rebounds) and Reggie Much (4 rebounds) each chipped in 6 points.

Sophomore Sydney Rzepka pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds for the Pirates (5-9), who continue play in the consolation bracket today with a 1:30 p.m. game against West Aurora.

West Aurora 38, Elk Grove 30: Sarah Pauscher (11 points, 5 rebounds), Abbey Sloan (8 points, 4 rebounds) and Alex Masnica (7 points, 3 rebounds) were top scorers for the Grenadiers (2-11), who face Willowbrook at 9 a.m. today.

Maine East 60, Leyden 39: Maine East improved to 2-1 at the St. Viator Blenner Holiday Classic and 9-4 overall while the Eagles slipped to 0-3 in the tourney and 4-9 overall.

Leyden meets Elmwood Park (0-3 in tourney) at 3 p.m. while Maine East faces Regina (1-2) at 4:30 p.m.
