Music notes: Catch Family Groove at Durty Nellie's

<h3 class="briefHead">Groove, Funk and Miles</h3>

When Highland Park-bred Jordan Wilkow and Adam Lewis went off to school in L.A., they teamed up with Janis Wallin and Pete Koopmans and brought back a pop-funk, jazzy jam band. Finding roots back home, Family Groove Company has been slinging groove-inspired rock around the Chicago scene since 2002. They're playing Palatine's music institution Durty Nellie's this weekend, with progressive funk rock band Chicago Funk Mafia and McHenry's four-piece Americana bluegrass band Miles Over Mountains. 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 26, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $10. (847) 358-9150 or durtynellies.com.

<h3 class="briefHead">Hometown charity </h3>

Channeling true holiday spirit, indie folk rocker extraordinaire Ike Reilly is bringing his band The Ike Reilly Assassination back to Mickey Finn's Brewery in his hometown to help families in need in Libertyville Township. The singer-songwriter handily drives the bar-blues-band vibe, taking fans through gritty but sometimes darkly humorous stories of the luckless, loveless and sometimes hardscrabble lives of folks in the heartland. Minneapolis-based Johnny Cash tribute band Church of Cash opens the set. The Libertyville Township Food Pantry will be on hand to collect items and donations. 8 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) Monday, Dec. 28, at Mickey Finn's Brewery, 345 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. $25 in advance, $30 at the door. (847) 362-6688 or brownpapertickets.com.
