Which books blew into Schaumburg Township on the cold winter winds?

According to the "magic numbers," (Schaumburg Township District Library's statistics), adults dove into novels by Agatha Christie, James Patterson, Debbie Macomber, Nora Roberts, John Grisham and Danielle Steel. These and all the STDL books, along with programs, movies and bus trips, will earn points in the winter reading program, "Your Library: The Great Escape!"

Each age group has different rules, but participating is fun and easy … and provides the chance to earn prizes. The winter reading program takes place from Dec. 1 through Jan. 31, with registration available online, at the Central Library in Schaumburg or the Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park branches. Adults who love getting lost in a good fiction title leaned toward crime and suspense, but romance was not far behind. Agatha Christie's Third Girl," "The Mysterious Affair at Styles," and "Destination Unknown" all topped the list. Many residents were curious about the recently released "Go Set a Watchmen," by Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird." John Grisham's "Rogue Lawyer" and Michael Connelly's "The Crossing" were cracked open by more than a few local readers. Of course, James Patterson never loses his spot on the popular book lists. His novels, "The Murder House" and "Alert," both had high circulation statistics. And Debbie Macomber, famous for her Cedar Cove series and countless other titles, made the top 12 with her Christmas novel, "Dashing Through the Snow."

Nonfiction titles for adults included actress Leah Remini's "Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology," and Erik Larson's "Dead Wake" and "The Devil in the White City." As people geared up for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, many checked out Ree Drummond's "The Pioneer Woman Cooks." Other nonfiction titles included "Killing Reagan" by Bill O'Reilly, "Why Not Me" by Minday Kaling, and Fodor's "Walt Disney World 2016" - highly recommended by me if you're planning a Disney vacation. Yes, you can wing it, but tips offered in the book will save you a bunch of time and money, thereby making the trip more fun and affordable. Travel books are located on the second floor in the 900s section (914-919).

Popular teen titles included James Patterson's "Confessions" and Veronica Roth's "Alegiant and Divergent". Young adults were also checking out "The One" by Kiera Cass, and "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. Another trendy title will be released as a movie in January. Richard Yancey's "The 5th Wave" is an award-winning alien suspense novel that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

For middle schoolers, Jeff Kinney's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" continues to top the charts this fall and winter, followed closely by "Pokemon Adventures," "Thomas & Friends," "Geronimo Stilton," "Big Nate," "DC Super Friends" and "Fancy Nancy." One of the most popular children's books for 2015 was "Hello, Olaf," based on the endearing snowman from "Frozen."
