Fremont students shop for a good cause

About 125 students from Fremont Elementary and Intermediate schools spent Thursday morning at Target in Mundelein shopping for a good cause.

The students, who were from multi-age classrooms for first and second grades and third and fourth grades, each had $60 to spend on needy children. They shopped with parent volunteers for 30 children whose families have fallen on hard times during the holiday season and are having difficulty buying Christmas gifts for their children.

The students raised money from their families as they participated in the Fremont Elementary District 79's annual outreach program.

"The families (receiving the gifts) are very appreciative," said 3-4 grade teacher Amanda Ramirez.

The students learned how to comparison shop to stay within a budget as they bought toys and clothes for the needy kids.

After shopping, students wrapped the gifts, read stories about helping others who may be down on their luck and wrote about their experience.
