Authorities: Man caught with more than 8 pounds of marijuana on I-90

A missing front plate could be the one overlooked item that lands a Rockford man in prison on drug charges.

Ahmad A. Mubarak, 35, of the 2200 block of Arthur Avenue, was charged with possession with intent to deliver more than eight pounds of marijuana and an ounce of heroin after a traffic stop Monday because his vehicle did not have a front license plate, according to authorities and Kane County court records.

Kane County Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said a deputy pulled over Mubarak for the missing plate at 12:45 p.m. Monday on eastbound Interstate 90 near Route 47 in Huntley and wrote a warning.

The deputy smelled an odor of marijuana, prompting an exterior examination by a drug-sniffing dog, which gave a positive signal.

In all, some 3,700 grams of marijuana with an estimated street value of $200,000 was seized, along with 28 grams, or an ounce, of heroin worth $10,000, Gengler said.

Mubarak was being held on $250,000 bail at the Kane County jail. He must prove any bail money posted on his behalf comes from legitimate, legal sources, according to court records.

He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge and is next due in court Dec. 9.

Mubarak does not have any previous arrests in Kane County, records show.

This arrest marks the third significant heroin and marijuana arrest on Interstate 90 in as many weeks.

Last week, state police arrested three Minnesota residents and two Chicago men in separate incidents on charges they were transporting heroin and marijuana.
