Collinsville officials approve residential chicken ordinance

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Officials in a southwest Illinois community have decided to allow up to 75 residents to keep chickens within city limits.

The Collinsville City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve an ordinance allowing chickens in residential districts. The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/1PWFZoh ) reports that the Collinsville Planning Commission and Mayor John Miller initially were against residential chickens, but eventually changed their positions and recommended the council approve the ordinance.

Miller and three council members voted in favor of the ordinance and the removal of a clause that would've given the ordinance a three-year trial term.

The ordinance will take effect 30 days after its passage and recording in the city clerk's office.
