Free health screenings available at Schaumburg Park District

Diane Amundsen was thinking about her bone health when she stopped by Meineke Recreation Center recently to check out fitness options. Hoping a regular exercise routine could help prevent the onset of osteoporosis, Amundsen was surprised to see the Schaumburg Park District and Amita Health were hosting free screenings for the condition that same September day.

"A lot of people have osteoporosis and don't have a clue," said Amundsen, of Schaumburg. "I think it's fantastic that Amita and the park district partner together to do this."

Free screenings are offered periodically throughout the year. The service, dubbed the Community Wellness Nurse Project, is funded by a grant Amita receives from the APIM.

"The Schaumburg Park District is a good vehicle for us to reach a lot of people because of its great facilities," said Susan Wickey, director of care management for Amita Health's accountable care organization. "The Community Wellness Nurse Project reflects the Ascension Health and Amita Health System values of caring for the community and demonstrates good stewardship."

Services provided include blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, stroke prevention and concussion awareness programs.

"Because the district supports a healthy lifestyle, it all goes hand in hand," said Alyssa Danca, fitness supervisor for the district. "We care about our patrons' health."

During the osteoporosis screening, Shari Roach, a community health education nurse for Amita, asked Amundsen to place her foot inside a bone density machine. The machine takes an ultrasound of the heel, which boasts mass similar to that of the spine and hip, where fractures occur most often, Roach said.

Amundsen's results revealed osteopenia, a precursor to osteoporosis. Regular exercise, along with calcium-rich foods may help prevent osteoporosis, Roach said.

"We're hoping people will become more aware of osteoporosis at an earlier age so they can maintain good bone health," Roach said. "The free health screenings are a very important community service."
