Student honored for leading Cyber Security Camp

Rolling Meadows High School junior Marc Roth Garcia was recently awarded for leading a six-day "Cyber Camp" for a dozen High School District 214 students.

The Air Force Association's CyberPatriot program provided curriculum and support for the camp held at Wheeling High School, which was administered by Lieutenant Commander Jeff Morse, Wheeling's Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps instructor.

For his role in teaching students about cyber security, Roth Garcia, a member of the NJROTC, was awarded the Cadet Achievement Ribbon, the second highest cadet achievement award in the organization.

"We feel cyber security and ethics are a major concern for the U.S. and will only become more important for future leaders. The camp and teams competing in cyber competitions grow the next generation of computer experts," said Morse.

"Cadet Roth Garcia studied the material for about a month and then turned around and presented it to his peers."

At the camp, students learned about cyber safety, cyber ethics and critical network security skills and tools through hands-on training in virtual computer and network environments.

They were later invited to the Northrop Grumman Rolling Meadows facility for a presentation on cyber security and hands-on Cyber "Capture the Flag."
