Local leaders should avoid small issues

I agree that it is not very efficient for local governments to exercise legislative power on inconveniences like outlawing squirrel feeders or gravel driveways.

These types of laws are nearly impossible to actually enforce. Although these issues may raise concern from people living in the area, I think that the government should focus time and energy on issues that affect a town as a whole and not create laws solely to ease the consciences of a few citizens.

In my town of Mundelein, a major issue on the agendas of newly elected trustees was to take action on legalizing backyard chicken farming. While this is an issue that may require the authority of local government, it is a very specific issue and should not be garnering so much attention.

Instead, more focus should be placed on problems that citizens encounter throughout their daily lives and how the government can enforce legislation to remedy them.
