East Suburban Week 6: Benet faces Nazareth in must-win game

Benet (4-1, 2-1) at Nazareth (4-1, 2-1) Game time: 7 p.m. Friday.

Last week: Benet 29, Marist 25; Nazareth 49, Marian Catholic 7.

Last year: Nazareth 35, Benet 13.

The latest in a string of big ESCC games for Benet comes against the defending Class 6A champion Roadrunners. Both sit a game behind Joliet Catholic in the standings - the Redwings lost to Notre Dame and Nazareth fell to Marian Central. This is a must-win for both to keep pace. Benet's offense has come alive behind junior quarterback Jack Sznajder, who last week notched a 300-yard passing game with 3 touchdowns with a terrific receiving corps headed by Robert Bordignon, Karl Schmidt, Will O'Grady and Matt Tromp. Marty Dosen, who's rushed for more than 500 yards, has developed into another go-to guy. It's no secret Nazareth leans on Notre Dame-bound Julian Love on both sides of the ball. While Love's dangerous in the passing game, Benet defensive lineman Trent Kramer, linebacker Charlie Weidenbach and the rest of the defense also need to be wary of Love on jet sweeps. Ivory Kelly-Martin is another potent ball carrier.

Next week: Benet at Carmel; Nazareth at Joliet Catholic.

St. Viator (1-4, 0-3) at Carmel (2-1, 2-3)

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Last year: Carmel 38, St. Viator 20

These two teams are headed in opposite directions.

Carmel has won two games in a row while St. Viator is on a three game slide.

St. Viator is averaging just 16.2 points per game, second fewest in the East Suburban Catholic Conference and allowing 30.6 points per game, third most in the league.

Running back Darreontae Jackson of St. Viator rushed for 193 yards on 21 carries last week against Notre Dame.

Carmel trailed St. Patrick 34-21 through three quarters last week but staged a big rally in the final 12 minutes. The Corsairs outscored St. Patrick 21-0 in the fourth quarter.

Carmel running back Rondel Jamison has been hot lately.

Last week he rushed 28 times for 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. Two weeks ago, he rushed for 151 yards on 20 carries.
