Help make Woodland a greener, healthier school

Woodland Elementary District 50 invites students staff, parents and community members to help make Woodland Primary School a healthier, more sustainable learning environment as part of the Green Apple Day of Service.

The event is set for 9 a.m. to noon, Sept. 26, at the school, 17366 W. Gages Lake Road, Gages Lake.

The Green Apple Day of Service, an initiative from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council, brings together advocates from around the world and encourages them to take action in their communities through service projects at local schools. The Day of Service, now in its third year, provides an opportunity for students, teachers, parents, elected officials, organizations, companies and more to transform all schools into healthy, safe, cost-efficient and productive learning places.

"The Green Apple Day of Service is an annual event that brings volunteers from around the world together to host local service projects that make schools healthier and more sustainable," Primary School Principal Stacey Anderson said. "We invite staff, parents, students and community members to be part of our Green Apple Day of Service at Woodland Primary."

The day will feature a variety of fun projects for children and adults, such as painting a "Growing up Green" mural in the school, painting a trike track on the playground, cleaning up the butterfly garden, and a scavenger hunt on the walking trail volunteers cleared at the 2014 Green Apple Day of Service.

Many of today's schools are beset by a host of challenges that compromise children's health and wellness, causing everything from asthma to headaches and concentration issues. The Green Apple Day of Service is helping transform schools into sustainable and healthy places to live, learn, work and play while educating a new generation of consumers and leaders - sustainability natives - capable of driving global market transformation.

The event is open to the community.
