Vernon Hills battles past Antioch
Vernon Hills' boys soccer team fought back in the rain to capture a 5-3 decision over Antioch in the teams' North Suburban Prairie Division opener Tuesday.
Vernon Hills (5-2) trailed 3-1 at halftime. Matt Hong, Cole Guillaume, Chris White, Joseph Lee and Brandon Kim scored for the Cougars. White, Lee and Kim had assists, while Brennan Reback had 5 saves in net for the win.
“It was nice to see us come out and put the ball away in the second half,” Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said. “Antioch is a solid team that is very physical, which gave us trouble all night. The conditions made for an interesting game, but both teams played well at times. This was a big game for our group. We needed to see a positive result, especially in such a big conference game. I think this game showed our kids what they are capable of offensively if they play quick attacking soccer.”
Warren 5, Stevenson 1: Hugo Flores scored twice and added an assist for the Blue Devils in the North Suburban Lake opener.
Richie Flores, Jacob Luka and Bryan Galvan also had goals for the winners. Martin Fuentes assisted on both of Hugo Flores' goals, while Ivan Isquivel and Alex Fratilo had assists as well for Warren (5-1-1).
Grayslake Central 1, McHenry 1: Paul Kulis scored off an assist from Nick Walker for the Rams in the Fox Valley crossover.
Conner Gosell had 4 saves in net for Grayslake Central (6-1-2).
Jacobs 4, Grayslake North 2: Chris Zamora and Brandon LeBaron scored for the visiting Knights, who surrendered three goals in the second half of the Fox Valley crossover.
Konrad Wasilewski had 3 goals and an assist for Jacobs.
Lake Forest 4, Zion-Benton 3: The Scouts led 3-0 at halftime on goals by Keegan Kullby, John Schlachtenhaufen and Daniel Hanson.
Zion-Benton rallied to tie the score at 3-3, but Lake Forest senior Matt Moderwell scored his fourth goal in four games to win the game with less than 10 minutes remaining. Moderwell also had 2 assists. Kullby had an assist, as well.
