Music notes: Get funky with Main Squeeze, North Coast Fest

<h3 class="briefHead">Head North</h3>

North Coast is finding its groove as a mashup of genres, all specializing in getting you on your feet. As if to prove my point, the not-to-miss headliners are neo-soul innovators D'Angelo and the Vanguard, electronic and house artists The Chemical Brothers and the hard-rocking Widespread Panic. Don't forget to throw hip-hop group Atmosphere, electro-funk duo Chromeo, indie rockers Portugal. The Man and electro house legend Steve Aoki into the mix. Also check out the local talent North Coast has in store, such as hard rockers The O'My's, electronic rockers Future Rock and Turbo Suit, house artists Green Velvet, Dangerwayne and DJ Zebo, Oak Brook's FOXHOVND, funksters Ne-Hi, The Heard and The Main Squeeze, jazz-soul crooner Lili K and Aurora's own experimental musician Barragoon. North Coast's EDM and house haven Heineken House has an even higher concentration of local music producers, highlighting the skills of acts such as Czboogie, DJ Heather, R.O.N.N. (aka Ron Carroll), Kings of Class, Roy Davis Jr., Bucky Fargo, Bentley Dean, Bisharat, Terry Hunter and many more. 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4; 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5; and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at Union Park, 1501 W. Randolph St., Chicago. Three-day passes are sold out, but single-day tickets start at $69 plus fees. northcoastfestival.com.

If you're in need of a little funk to get that body moving, check out The Main Squeeze at the Bottom Lounge Friday. The unique blend of herbs and spices they bring to the stage - part funk, part blues and a healthy serving of good old-fashioned rock 'n' roll - keeps the energy high and the rhythms thumping. Psychedelic soul rockers Woo Park will be laying down the opening beats, but The Main Squeeze will rage as the main event for this official North Coast Music Fest 17-and-older after party. 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake St., Chicago. $17; (312) 666-6775 or bottomlounge.com.

<h3 class="briefHead">Back in time</h3>

Whether your fetish is flannel or cardigans, head to Durty Nellie's to get another taste of the '90s. Chicago-area bands Secondhand Smoke and Funky Monks will pay tribute to the best of Sublime and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Our Name Is Jonas will channel Weezer as they perform their final show (before the lead singer moves off to California). This is a 21-and-older show (but if you're under 21, you most likely don't remember the '90s firsthand anyway). 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $8 in advance, $10 at the door; (847) 358-9150 or durtynellies.com.
