Ads coming to Mundelein High scoreboard

Mundelein High School officials hope advertisements on the football stadium scoreboard will help create additional revenue for the athletic program.

An LED advertising panel and two traditional printed advertising panels soon will be added to the scoreboard, ideally by the Sept. 11 homecoming game, Athletic Director Perry Wilhelm said.

An Ohio company called Side Effects is paying for the equipment. The company will collect all the advertising revenue generated by the panels until they're paid off, Wilhelm said.

After that point, the company and Mundelein High will split ad revenue equally, he said.

“Nothing is costing our taxpayers a penny,” Wilhelm said. “We're excited about it.”

Wilhelm said he heard about Side Effects at a convention for athletic directors. Warren Township High School District 121 has a similar advertising deal with the company, he said.

Glenbard High School District 87 officials considered an advertising deal for their athletic scoreboards with a different firm a few years ago, but the proposal fell through.

Wilhelm didn't have an estimate for anticipated revenue. It depends on how many ads are purchased, he said.

“All I know is, it's going to be more than we're getting,” he said.
