McDonald's cuts another 225 jobs

McDonald's has laid off 135 workers at its Oak Brook headquarters and another 90 at overseas offices, according to documents posted Thursday by the state.

Documents released by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity also said other suburban companies, including DeVry Online Services, Lombard Vacation Store and Wistron Mobile Solutions Corp. are laying off nearly 200 workers.

The global restaurant chain said in January that it would restructure as it replaced its chief executive officer. By May, President and CEO Steve Easterbrook talked about a turnaround plan that involved restructuring to save about $300 million annually by late 2017.

This latest round of 225 brings the total to 353 layoffs in less than a year. McDonald's had previously cut 63 jobs last December and 65 in January.

"We do not take decisions that impact jobs lightly, but we committed in May to implement meaningful changes to reset our business, remove layers and find cost efficiencies, and we are acting with a sense of urgency on that commitment," said McDonald's spokeswoman Heidi Barker Sa Shekhem.

Other area companies with layoff notices include:

DeVry Online Services in Chicago with 95 workers. Workers were notified in July and layoffs are expected in September. The firm has operations in Downers Grove.

• Wistron Mobile Solutions Corp., a custom computer programming service in Rolling Meadows, is cutting 62 workers in September.

• Lombard Vacation Store in Lombard is cutting 39 workers by September.
