Couples invited on romantic night hike
Couples are invited to experience a rare evening under the stars during a "Midsummer Romantic Night Hike" from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at Fullersburg Woods Nature Education Center, 3609 Spring Road, Oak Brook.
Couples will take a self-guided moonlit hike on lantern-lit paths that meander through an oak forest, pausing on scenic bridges to listen to the soothing sounds of nocturnal critters and the rolling waters of Salt Creek.
They'll also be treated to a "blue moon," the second full moon in the calendar month, which occurred the night prior to their visit Friday, July 31. Popcorn, lemonade and s'mores around a fire pit await couples at the end of the trail.
"It has long been known the Fullersburg Woods is nature's oasis in the suburbs," Forest Preserve District Commissioner Jeff Redick said. "This event will give couples a very different experience as they witness the unique brand of night life that Fullersburg has to offer."
Fullersburg Woods naturalist Leslie Bertram said the district added a summertime night hike due to the popularity of the February hike just before Valentine's Day.
"This is a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of the forest preserves at night," said Joe Cantore, forest preserve district president.
The "Midsummer Romantic Night Hike" is for adults only and is $10 per couple. Advance registration is required by calling Fullersburg at (630) 850-8110.
