Removing townships won't save money

This letter is addressed to the county commissioners and state legislators that have suddenly jumped on the property tax bandwagon.

These politicians want the public to believe that by eliminating township assessors, they will be saving money for homeowners. Eliminating township assessors will not save taxpayers any real money, even in the best case scenario.

Township government comprises just over .012 percent of my total tax bill for its operation, including the Assessor's office. For my property, that is $62.60.

Local government is low hanging fruit for politicians who want to appear to be working in the public's interest, but eliminating local assessors creates more problems for seniors than could be solved.

Until we find a more equitable way to fund schools in the state of Illinois other than on the backs of homeowners, then this talk is nothing more than political posturing.
