Former lumber storage facility catches fire in Elgin

An abandoned lumber storage facility caught fire Monday afternoon in Elgin, damaging it and a nearby car, fire officials said.

The blaze started about 3:30 p.m. in the facility on the 0-100 block of Jefferson Avenue. Elgin Firefighters arrived to find the building heavily involved in fire, according to a department release.

The fire caused extensive damage, and heat from the blaze also damaged a car parked in the driveway next door, officials said. Nobody was injured.

The fire remains under investigation with damage estimated at $5,000.
