Wheeling to sell village's senior center to hospice, nursing facility

Wheeling trustees have approved a contract for the $875,000 sale of the village's senior center on First Street to neighboring Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Centre.

It's one step toward relocating the village's senior programming to the park district's Community Recreation Center off Dundee Road. The village and the park district are in the midst of planning a possible addition at the rec center to make space for the move.

The roughly 500 members who use the current senior center aren't moving out yet. The village will lease the 6,080-square-foot building from Greek American for two years, with a possible two-year extension. The rent? A dollar annually.

The contract and lease agreement do two things. One, the proceeds from the sale will be earmarked toward construction costs related to a senior center wing at the rec center, village officials say. And two, senior center users won't be displaced until a project is complete.
